Biology

Biology at CRGS aims to stimulate an interest in the millions of other organisms that we share the Earth with: their adaptations and how they relate to each other. We also look to try and help answer the topical issues pupils of which pupils should be aware:

* MMR debate Swine flu or avian flu – which is worse

* What's wrong with cholesterol

*Cheap battery eggs or expensive organic, free range eggs?

These questions are looked at using a range of skills emphasising the ability to think scientifically. The courses followed are AQA GCSE Biology (4411) CIE iGCSE Biology and AQA GCE Biology (2410).

All pupils have opportunities to experience filed work – in lower school they will attend a one day visit to Highwoods Country Park in Colchester. Year 10 will visit Wakehurst Place in Sussex and Lower Sixth students attend a three-day residential course in Shropshire.

Years 10 & 11 – IGCSE Biology

(Cambridge International Examinations syllabus code 0610)

Topics taught include cell biology, human biology, botany, reproductive biology and ecology with an emphasis to gain knowledge with understanding. Lessons aim to make use of up-to-date newspaper articles, video footage and the collection of data using practical techniques in order to apply knowledge gained.
