GCSE ART & DESIGN gives students the opportunity to be creative and make personal responses to subjects, themes and issues, using a wide range of materials and processes.
A variety of creative approaches will be used to engage students in investigating, experimenting, documenting and realising two- and three-dimensional work as practitioners and as critics.
Projects will involve developing practical skills in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture, from observation and imagination. Critical and contextual studies will be used to develop students' knowledge and understanding of different styles and traditions in art and to inform their own creative responses.
Visits to exhibitions and galleries, fieldwork, and artists in residence will be used to give students the opportunity to broaden their art experience.
Assessment:
- Internally Set Coursework (60%)
- Externally Set Assignment (40%)
(Controlled Test with Supporting Studies)
There are two coursework units which are developed in years 10 and 11. Formative assessment is used to monitor and develop this work.
The Externally Set Assignment takes plcae at the end of the course. This is given to students eight weeks prior, to the ten hour timed test, so they can produce preparatory supporting studies that cover the four assessment objectives.
The four Assessment Objectives are:
- (AO1) Record observation, experiences and ideas in forms that are appropriate to intentions.
- (AO2) Analyse and evaluate images, objects and artefacts showing understanding of context.
- (AO3) Develop and explore ideas using media, processes and resources, reviewing, modifying and refining work as it progresses.
- (AO4) Present a personal response, realising intentions and making informed connections with the work of others.
Students choosing Art & Design have gone on to art-based careers in Fine Art, animation, textiles, fashion, advertising, marketing, graphic design, three-dimensional design, architecture, publishing, television, the media and education.
A-Level Course (edexcel AS 8030, A 9030)
Full specificationThe Art department offers a flexible course at AS and A-level which is designed to suit the requirements of the student. We specialise in drawing and painting in a wide range of materials, with opportunities for three-dimensional work, photography and computer graphics.
The department also offers information and advice on suitable courses, the presentation of portfolios, and the conduct of interviews for those wishing to prepare for higher education at art schools, universities and other colleges. The A-level course has also been used as a Foundation Course enabling direct entry to art school.
There is a programme of residential weekends and trips to art exhibitions as well as demonstrations by visiting artists. The department also runs a regular exhibition of work by the students at various venues.
The aims of the Art course are to develop:
- intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers;
- investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills, aesthetic understanding and critical judgement;
- an understanding of the interrelationships between art, craft and design and an awareness of the contexts in which they operate;
- knowledge and understanding of art, craft and design in contemporary society and in other times and cultures.

The course forms part of an educational continuum which progresses from Key stages 1, 2 and 3 in the National Curriculum for Art and the GCSE Art criteria.
Beyond A-level
The course enables students to develop their visual and communication skills leading to careers in fine art, art history, architecture, advertising, graphic, 3D and product design, animation, fashion and textiles, film, television and the media, arts education and administration. Others use the exam to broaden tehir education experience and gain points in support of their university entrance.
