GCSE Course (AQA 4462)

At GCSE students can opt to take either a single GCSE in Science, the details of which are given below, or they can study separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

This specification is one of a suite of GCSE Sciences specifications offered by AQA. The specification leads to a single award GCSE Science. The award has 4 assessment units.

GCSE Science B has 45 minute written papers with structured questions, one paper for each of Biology 1, Chemistry 1 and Physics 1, available in January and June. The papers also examine how science works.

  • Biology 1: Written paper (25%, 45 minutes, 45 marks)
  • Chemistry 1: Written paper (25%, 45 minutes, 45 marks)
  • Physics 1: Written paper (25%, 45 minutes, 45 marks)

Centre-Assessed Unit based on normal class practical work, 25% of total marks (40 marks).

Investigative Skills Assignment - an externally set, internally assessed test taking 40 minutes + Practical Skills Assessment - an holistic skills assessment.

This covers all aspects of a good science education: evaluating evidence and the implications of science for society; explaining, theorising and modelling in science; and procedural and technical knowledge of science practice, though with some emphasis on the first aspect. The whole K54 Science Programme of Study, with the subject areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics are presented separately so that they can be taught by subject specialists as this suits the staffing and teaching strategy at CRGS, Students who are successful in GCSE Science would find progression to GCE Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Applied Science difficult without further preparation.

A-Level Course

There is no A-level in Science; instead, students can study separate A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
