Theatre-goers battled through arctic conditions last night to give the warmest of receptions to a brand new musical called “Pandora”, composed, written and directed by two Colchester Royal Grammar School students. James Bowstead and Oliver Wood created the piece as an Extended Project Qualification during their final year in the sixth form. James, who has recently been awarded an organ scholarship to Oxford, composed and orchestrated the score, musically directing the entire piece from the piano. Oliver took on the demanding task of producer, as well as designing and building the set, playing in the band and singing a solo on stage.
 Millie Binks as Pandora
Set in Ancient Greece against the impressive backdrop of a Greek temple, the musical tells the story of Pandora, created at Zeus’ behest, to bring punishment on the human race. Lured by trickery to open the box given her as a wedding gift by Zeus, Pandora, played by Millie Binks, unleashes the horrors of the world on mankind. All that is left is Hope, secretly hidden in the box by the goddess Hera, played by Jemima Paine to redeem the evils planted there by her petulant husband Zeus, played by Gabriel Bambridge.
The performance received a standing ovation and was an outstanding success. Congratulations to all involved. It was a great team effort.

34 CRGS students have received offers from the Oxbridge Colleges this year after coming through the demanding selection process. 11 offers come from Oxford University and 23 from Cambridge. A Colchester Gazette article on 2 February lists all the students, their colleges and their courses. Their photograph features some of the successful students but a special mention should go to Rose Bickerton, Frank Broomfield, Chris Cheyney, Ben Ridley-Johnson,Tom Watkins, Jeffrey Yim, Joe Spencer, Guy Linch and Jos Swanwick who were otherwise engaged when the photograph was taken.

The Headmaster was pleased that the offers spanned the full curriculum, from Music to Modern Languages, from Economics to English, from History to Science and from Classics to Medicine, and that the Oxbridge success was shared between boys and girls, day students and boarders.
Year 13 students are currently receiving offers from a wide range of leading universities including LSE, Durham, Exeter, Bristol, Leeds, Warwick, Nottingham, UCL, Imperial and King’s and they are to be congratulated on their successful UCAS applications. The offers will continue to flow in this term and are at this stage mostly conditional. The students will be working hard in the coming months to meet the challenging targets set and secure their place at their first choice university. |

National Economics Prize for Anurag Shinkar (Year 12) |

Who should be responsible for teaching you about personal finance? This was the question posed by the annual Baillie Gifford essay competition, which aims to stretch the writing skills of young economists beyond the normal A-level specification. The essay entries were judged on relevance, ability to argue from different points of view and ideas discussed. From hundreds of entries to the competition nationwide, we are very pleased to hear that our very own Anarug Shinkar was selected as the national runner up. His efforts have won both a mini-laptop for himself, and £100 of book vouchers for the CRGS Economics Department. |

Year 12 Record Company Launch “Anglia Underground” |
|
Monday, 30 January 2012 08:48 |
|
Back in October, just as the X-factor machine began its annual attempt to dominate the Christmas music charts, twenty-five CRGS students in year 12 formed a new Young Enterprise company. In their own rage against the machine they set about developing a new record company – Panacea Enterprises, with corporate aims of promoting creativity and talent at the grass roots. Three months later, Panacea Enterprises have successfully produced and retailed the highly acclaimed album: “Anglia Underground “.
Anglia Underground is a compilation album of 15 tracks, all written and performed by local artists, representing a variety of styles and genres. The tagline on their album describes it well: “Untamed, Untampered, Underground”.
Help support their campaign to develop the next generation of musical talent from East Anglia! “Like” them on facebook, tweet about them , or buy their album! Anglia Underground is available to order online at: www.panacea-records.co.uk and is stocked at Colchester Tourist Information office.

Thursday, 26 January 2012 14:12 |
Congratulations to last year’s A-level students whose examination results put CRGS at the very top of this year's official national performance table for post 16 qualifications, a position the school is now enjoying for the fifth year running! The DfE tables were published on 26 January and CRGS's success attracted media interest from the local press and the BBC.
This year's average points score per student was 1477.1 and by far the highest on record at the school. The score was over 100 points up on last year’s table-topping total and 120 points ahead of this year’s second placed school, Sevenoaks School, Kent.
