On Sunday 5th March, the District Final of the BPW (Business and Professional Women) UK Public Speaking Competition was held at the Holiday Inn, Colchester. Year 12 students Katherine Ellis, Hannah Vickers and Georgia Crown took to the stage to carry out their respective roles as Expresser of Thanks, Chairperson and Speaker, with the hope of making it to the UK National Final.

The CRGS team had tough competition from three other schools (The Stanway School, Colchester High School and Mayflower School, Billericay). Hannah and Katherine were first to present with the Speaker from The Stanway School. Despite being interupted during her presentation, Hannah carried on as if nothing had happened and did not let it affect her speech. Katherine used the room well and spoke with great expression and pace.

Georgia came up to the stage with the Chairperson and Expresser of Thanks from Colchester High School. Once again, she gave her very persuasive speech about the importance of organ donation. Georgia had presence, good pace and was eloquent when answering the audience’s questions, showing great subject knowledge. All in all, the three Sixth Formers from CRGS showed a fantastic team spirit.

Waiting over an hour for the judges to decide on the winner proved to be very tense in the end for all the schools involved, but all the teams had performed brilliantly and the wait only demonstrated how close the competition was. To the girls’ delight, however, CRGS were named the winners, and the team have now gone through to the UK National Final in Shropshire, which will be held on 25th March. Congratulations!
