CRGS Sci Fest - Saturday 17th March, 10am-4pm

Posted On: 08/03/18

Would you like to experience a day as a doctor? Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a forensic scientist? Have you ever considered using pedal-power to Nutri-bullet your smoothie?

Sci Fest will be held at CRGS on Saturday 17th March, and we invite you to explore the exciting world of science. We have lots of exciting activities taking place at CRGS during British Science Week.

The event will include a range of workshops and activities run both by CRGS pupils and external providers. Activities on offer include: interactive forensics and autopsy labs, a dissection lab, Medical Mavericks, sports science workshop, planetarium, computing workshop, Dr Death and MediEVIL Medicine Pantomime, immersive theatre, bike-powered smoothie makers, Essex Wildlife Trust, 3D printing, activities delivered by University students, and a STEM careers fair. It will also be an opportunity for CRGS STEM clubs, such as the Lego League, to demonstrate their hard work from this year.

Furthermore, we are thrilled to announce that winner of BBC2 series Astronauts, Dr Suzie Imber, will be a guest at Sci Fest, and Suzie will be running some demos relating to planetary science. We are also waiting to confirm whether other stars from Astronauts will be able to attend.

This year we have included a greater number of activities to engage students at GCSE and A level, as well as Primary and KS3. This includes the workshop run by the Medical Mavericks, which will run throughout the day with each session lasting around 45 minutes. In this time, everyone will have the opportunity to ‘be’ doctors, taking ultrasound scans, practising taking blood, performing keyhole surgery and using ECGs. This will be a fantastic experience for any budding medics out there!

Sci Fest is open to the whole community, including CRGS pupils, their families, pupils from other schools, and the general public. Entry to Sci Fest is free, although some premium events will incur a small charge. Last year, over 2000 people visited Sci Fest – this year we hope to welcome even more!

Limited car parking will be available via the Creffield Road entrance and in the local Colchester car parks.

Sci Fest Photography Competition

To coincide with Sci Fest, we are running a photography competition, open to all ages. Examples of biology, chemistry and physics aren't just in the classroom, they're all around us. Snap a picture of one of these and send it in. Prizes for winning entries will be Amazon vouchers. For your chance to win, you need to send us a picture with a caption, explaining how it relates to science by Tuesday 13th March 2018. Entries should be emailed to adaisley@crgs.co.uk or a hard copy handed in for Miss Daisley in the Science Office. All entries will be displayed in the Science Gallery at Sci Fest. Good luck!
