Physical Education
The department consists of three full-time staff who have a variety of roles appertaining to the school. These PE staff are supported by a number of teachers from other departments. The school’s sporting facilities include a gymnasium, swimming pool, outstanding playing fields and a hard court area with three tennis courts.
The department aims to provide students with a broad and balanced curriculum. The traditional sports of rugby and cricket are the ‘major team sports’, but tennis, athletics, football, basketball, swimming, gymnastics and fitness activities complement these areas. Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 also benefit from being able to utilize the facilities at Colchester Leisure World.
Sport provides students with the opportunity to excel on a national stage, as well as creating friendships and team spirit which carries across the school.

Curriculum at a glance
Key Stage 3
Within Physical Education lessons and Games learners will be exposed to a variety of sports and activities where they will be encouraged to develop motor skills across activities such as functional movement skills, athletics, rugby, football, and striking and fielding games. Students are also encouraged to develop their tactical awareness of these activities, as well as traditional sports, within modules comprising: Invasion Games, rugby, football, striking and fielding games, table tennis and basketball. The final pillar of progression within PE and Games is through ‘healthy participation’ which informs students of the health benefits of taking part in sport and physical activity, and is highlighted specifically within our FMS athletics and fitness modules.
Key Stage 4
Students are expected to develop the baseline motor skills taught, and are routinely provided with opportunities to execute those skills in game-based situations. In addition to demonstrating these skills under the pressure of game-based situations, students are encouraged to develop a tactical and analytical approach to their performance in order to outwit their opposition, or a defender, using the development of tactics and strategies within the sport or activity. Within Games lessons students are given the chance to represent the school in National Cup rugby fixtures and RGS Cricket festival fixtures if they choose, along with numerous regular sporting fixtures, including, but not limited to, football, rugby, cricket, athletics and basketball.
Key Stage 5
At Key stage 5 students have the option of taking A level PE which covers a range of topics including the socio-cultural factors behind sport, contemporary issues in sport, sports physiology, anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and exercise physiology. Within Games Options student are given a choice of activities which change every term. The options include, badminton, basketball, football, rugby, rounders, cricket, netball, fitness, table tennis, and tennis.
Enrichment and Support
Students are encouraged to work hard within their lessons and expand their knowledge and skills in the extra-curricular programme. Extra-curricular provision is varied and all students have the opportunity to participate at their own level in both competitive and recreational activities.
A full programme of inter-school fixtures is organised on a yearly basis and students also have the opportunity to participate in inter-house sport in a variety of activities.
Successes range from local and regional to national and even international level.
