CRGS Win ESU Public Speaking Competition

Posted On: 15/01/20

On Tuesday 14th January, two teams from CRGS participated in the first heat of the ESU (English Speaking Union) public speaking competition, against Colchester County High School for Girls, St Mary’s School and The Stanway School . Pranav Bhatt (Chairperson), Emmanuel Togoh (Speaker) and Alfie Lambton (Questioner) made up Team 1, and Ibraheem Sand, Miles Black and Harnij Singh were Chairperson, Speaker and Questioner respectively in Team 2.

Emmanuel chose to speak on the bias against introverts in society, whilst Miles, a keen environmentalist, delivered a speech about the Amazon rainforest fires being the greatest environmental emergency. Both teams carried out their presentations remarkably well and after what seemed like a nail-bitingly long wait the judges announced the results: Emmanuel Togoh won Best Speaker, Harnij Singh won Best Questioner, and Team 2 won the award for Best Team! Ibraheem, Miles and Harnij are through to the branch final, which will take place at Anglia Ruskin University in February.

Well done to everyone who took part in the first round. Many thanks to CCHS for hosting the event, and to James Scruby for organising the competition. We wish the boys lots of luck in the next round!
